Redbeard’s Pirate Quest was a smart toy computer game for kids developed by Zowie Interactive, one of the few commercial offshoots of Paul Allen's Interval Research group. The most outstanding thing about this game is that it is played using only a toy pirate ship that is connected to the computer (the player never uses the computer keyboard). The toy ship and sensing technology, which used radio frequency tags on a two dimensional antenna, were in simultaneous development at Zowie while my team worked on the PC game software. As a result, we were often working with pre-production hardware, and were involved in the refinement of the API.
The Flash Promo is a short Flash animation taken from the original Zowie web site which shows a bit of the technology.
